One of my favorite resources as a busy caregiver is The Lazy Genius Podcast, which focuses on compassionate time management and offers tips for being a genius about the things that matter and lazy about the things that don’t.
Every quarter, she shares an episode listing what’s saving her life right now, and I’ve fallen in love with that practice. It’s a way of pausing to notice what’s bringing you joy, ease or grounding in your life whether that’s a person, a routine, or a product – you get to decide. It’s about intentionally noticing and appreciating the things that make life better, even in small ways.
Every phase of your life and career will require a different you.
Mel Robbins
Mel Robbins says, “Every phase of your life and career will require a different you.” This exercise has shown me how true that is. Each season of my life has looked different and by writing down what is saving my life, I have been able to look back at many different seasons to see what changes, and what has stayed consistent, throughout each season.
During our Global Kickoff Call (link to recording) we asked our fellow parents and caregivers across the globe:
“What is one small thing that is saving your life right now?”
The responses were honest, heart warming, and inspiring. My hope is that seeing what’s helping others will spark ideas for your own life — and remind you that sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and maybe even make your own list today.
People & Connection
Living in connection with other can be truly life giving. If you find connection through back-to-school events, carpooling with other families, spending time with dear friends, a relaxing evening with your family or sneaking in a lunch date – make time to truly connect with the people in your life.
For parents and caregivers in particular, time and connection are valuable tools. Investing in aftercare or respite care, even just once a month so you can be with friends, go on a date, or spend time with yourself can be money well spent for peace of mind and a moment of connection. Investing in time to give you a little more freedom to be able to get the rest that you need and the connection you desire.
Mind & Spirit
Whether you find spirituality through dedicated time for faith, religion, prayer or meditation – finding time to connect with yourself or a higher power and reflect in gratitude, thankfulness and positivity can be a saving grace.
If you prefer to step away from religion – feed your mind and soul connection through music, audio and physical books, meditation or yoga. There are plenty of different unconventional ways to meditate and be mindful – find what works best for you.
Body & Movement
Movement is a gift to both your body and mind. For some, that might mean a walk around the block, a yoga class, or a friendly game of pickleball. For others, it’s time outdoors — soaking up sunshine, feeling the calm of a rainy day, or traveling somewhere new to experience different sights and sounds. And sometimes, the most restorative movement is no movement at all, like sinking into a warm jacuzzi or jetted tub and letting the stress melt away.
Daily Routines & Tools
Regular and consistent routines can bring comfort and clarity, especially in busy seasons. A consistent rhythm to your day creates a sense of stability, and by integrating simple tools like daily to-do lists and shared calendars can help keep both work and personal life on track.
When possible, opt for flexible work arrangements. A well-equipped home office, even the blessing of strong WiFi and a low email volume, can allow life to flow more smoothly from your full-time job to your second shift as a caregiver.
Comforts & Joys
Never underestimate the power of small comforts.
A warm cup of coffee, a favorite cold beverage at the end of the day, a snuggle from a pet, or time to enjoy a hobby can all bring joy into your daily life.
Whether you’re diving into something comforting, exploring new hobbies, or revisiting an old favorite, these small pleasures can offer a welcome pause from the busyness of caregiving and work.
Time Savers
Sometimes, the things that keep us going aren’t big milestones or grand gestures — they’re the quiet, everyday supports that help us get through the day. For some, it’s the ease of ordering groceries through Instacart, saving precious time and energy for what matters most. For others, it’s the reliability of great Wi-Fi, keeping us connected to loved ones, work, and vital resources without frustration. And occasionally, it’s the rare gift of a low email volume, offering a small pocket of calm in an otherwise busy day.
